Our First Take

Monopoly is one of the most played board games of all time, and Evolution Gaming, a powerhouse in live casino, brought it in the shape of a live money wheel show in 2019 for both the UK and outside of it.

The live game show board, or rather, the game studio located in a high-rise hotel room, captures that board game vibe really well. The giant colourful wheel takes centre stage, with the Monopoly M at its heart, golden frames on either side, and an animated city skyline of skyscrapers and hot air balloons stretching out behind it.

Of course, Mr Monopoly made a cameo, too. You can spot him in his armchair right beside the wheel, with the host right there alongside him. The presenter threw real warmth into every spin and even pulled off the odd dance move between them. In a live show, you need a clean stream above all else, and this one delivered a crisp, lag-free performance throughout.

You can play Monopoly Live online on desktop or on mobile, whether you want to download an app or not. We did some rounds on Android and had no issues. United Kingdom casinos have only the British version of the board; the game is also available in German and Italian, otherwise.

Important Details

Sometimes roulettes just won’t scratch that itch, and that’s why some lean towards the wheel shows. These still can feel hard to tell apart at first, especially if you are new to them. Crazy Time packs in four bonus rounds, while Dream Catcher strips everything back to the wheel alone.

Monopoly Live finds its own space between the two, with a tighter bet panel and just a single big bonus round. The base mechanics are basically what you’d expect from a game wheel show, but still worth a look.

The Rules Up Close

It all starts at the best panel, where you pick from six spots before the wheel spins. A short timer sets the pace of each round, the host spins the wheel, and a pointer up top settles on one spot to call the result. Not much of a Monopoly vibe at this pace, but just wait until you go further.

You have a whole 64-segments to choose from, which might sound overwhelming, but it really isn’t.

Your Bet Options

The first call before any spin is your stake. Luckily, that range is rather wide in Monopoly Live from Evolution, from £0.10 up to £2,500 per spin, so both low rollers and high rollers get a seat at the table. Then you need to choose your segments.

Four of those are numbers: 1, 2, 5, and 10. The remaining two are 2 Rolls and 4 Rolls, which open up the Monopoly board round that we get to shortly.

Number 1 holds 22 of the 54 segments, more than any other result on the wheel, and pays 1 to 1 per hit. You will see it come around regularly, which makes it a comfortable place to start. The ‘2’ claims 15 segments and returns 2 to 1, a step up in both rarity and reward.

From there, the climb steepens. The 5 turns up on just 7 segments and gives back 5 to 1 when the pointer stops on it. Rarest of all is the 10, down to a mere 4 segments, yet it rewards a correct call at 10 to 1.

Chance follows its own rules, as you can’t bet on it. If the wheel stops on it during your turn, Mr Monopoly will step in to draw a card for the whole table. That card either drops a cash prize into every player’s lap at once or pins a multiplier onto the next spin to lift whatever it pays. Those flashes of luck were some of our favourites across the test.

We really dig the best panel below the wheel. Evolution drew its design straight from the classic Monopoly banknotes, bold colours and all. You can back more than one spot at once, too, and two results in play give each spin more pull, though your total builds up fast as you add spots, so keep an eye on it. There is also a Bet on All button that covers every spot in one tap if you want to skip the manual pick entirely.

3D Bonus Round

That’s it for the wheel round; it is just a part of what the Monopoly Live game show offers after all. We’ve already talked a bit about 2 Rolls and 4 Rolls; bet on them, and you’ll enter the 3D casino bonus round if they are selected. Prizes there can reach up to £500,000. There are no cheats or tricks to make it trigger more frequently.

When you do hit it, the screen changes to a 3D board game, and so the proper Monopoly action begins. Mr Monopoly finally steps onto a full virtual Monopoly board. Everyone can spectate it, but only the winners get to actually play.

The board is covered with tiles from the OG board game: properties, utilities, Free Parking, Jail, Chance, and Community Chest, each affect your winnings in its own way. You can even spot houses and hotels on random properties to push those prize values up before your first throw.

The number of throws depends on which segment brought you here. 2 Rolls give you two, and 4 rolls give you four. On each throw, Mr Monopoly moves forward by the total on both dice and collects cash prizes depending on where he stops, and some tiles are rather rewarding. Pass GO, for example, doubles your running total on the spot.

Not every square is that kind, though. Income Tax cuts your total by 10%, and Super Tax takes 20%. Jail holds Mr Monopoly in place until a double turns up, while Chance and Community Chest swing either way with an instant prize or a fee. There’s a tracker that’s updated with each dice roll, so you can keep an eye on your stats throughout.

Roll a double, and you get another throw straight away. The one exception is when that double gets Mr Monopoly out of Jail. Even so, a 2-roll entry can stretch well past two throws. Once no throws remain, your Bonus Round wins are paid out together with your original stake, and you return to the main wheel.

I ran three rounds in my test, and the board never fired once. So everything I can tell you comes from the base wheel casino game. The host kept those spins from feeling flat, and the Chance cards gave a couple of rounds a lift they would not have had otherwise. Three rounds are not enough to call the bonus round rare, but it tells you not to count on it every time you sit down.

I started small with two bets of 10p, and it lasted me for two rounds. The board game round didn’t fire for either of the other players or me, but I lucked out with a Chance card on round 2. Not a bad game, but don’t go in expecting to hit the 3D game easily.
