Our Lightning Blackjack review starts at the table itself. Evolution Gaming released the game in 2021. It follows European blackjack rules, but adds a random multiplier after each winning hand.

The desktop table game’s interface is easy on the eye. The dark Art Deco-style design, gold accents, and clearly defined areas for the cards make the layout uncluttered. The animations are neatly done, and the main buttons are easy to spot. Sounds are quiet and consistent, with clear voiceovers for the cards and the dealer, so they don’t become tiresome too quickly.

Lightning Blackjack is part of Evolution’s wider Lightning series, which also includes roulette, baccarat and craps. This version brings the Lightning concept to the world of card games. The main difference from standard blackjack is the mandatory Lightning commission, which is deducted from every base bet. This commission alters the payout pattern, as you forgo a portion of your usual winnings in exchange for the chance to receive a multiplier.

The Rules of the Game

Lightning Blackjack retains all the skeletons of live blackjack: European rules, 8 decks, and a live dealer. On top of this, it is constructed with a forced multiplier element that alters the financial model for every single hand played.

Before looking at what that means in practice, here is how the game is built.

The controls are right where you’d expect: chip select, bet circle, and action buttons. None of the functions is hidden. Auto-stand was perfect. However, the forced doubling of the mandatory rake works best if you are already comfortable with basic card charts, not if you are a newcomer.

Bet Types

The Lightning Blackjack game carries no traditional side bets. The only bets available per hand are:

• Main bet: Your standard blackjack wager, placed within the 15-second betting window.
• Lightning Fee: Mandatory, auto-collected at 100% of your main bet every round, no exceptions. Bet £5, pay a £5 fee – £10 out before cards are dealt. Lost on a push or a losing hand with no recovery. The only way it returns value is through an active multiplier on a winning hand.
• Push: Main bet is returned. Lightning Fee and any active multiplier are forfeited. The same applies to insurance: the main bet is backed out, and the fee and multiplier are gone.

It’s nice that the table doesn’t feel like it’s stuffed with 21+3 and Perfect Pairs boxes. With a mandatory fee, the effective stake is easier to underrate. So my strategy would be to set the chip value lower than on a normal blackjack table.

As for bonuses, Lightning Blackjack live doesn’t have blackjack bonuses or a separate game. The rules described below operate within the framework of the multipliers that determine payments.

• Lightning Multiplier: When you win a hand, you get an applied multiplier (2x – 25x), which is tied to your winning hand and carries to the next hand. If you win, it’s paid as a percentage of your wager up to the Lightning commission amount. If you lose the multiplier, the bet and commission are all gone.
• Double Multiplier: Can be applied to any of the first 2 cards. The multiplier effectively doubles your base bet (you pay another bet), and one card is hit. Winning the hand would play your multiplier on your doubled bet (up to the limit). If you lose, the multiplier is nullified.
• Split: Can be applied to any pair. This requires another main bet, as each card becomes a hand with its own multiplier (the highest winner takes the multiplier forward).

I see the feature as a trade-off, not a pure upgrade. The 25x ceiling is useful if you accept a higher round cost, but the fee means this table is less suitable if you are trying to stretch a small balance.

Our expert played live Lightning Blackjack. He tested the system to see how the multiplier looks in each round. Here is his opinion:

I can tell right away that the table was clean throughout the round – the card values, multiplier board, and bet amounts were easy to read. 15 seconds is acceptable if you don’t need to make important decisions or if only a combination of the multiplier board and game strategies occurred. A hand with a 12x carry in blackjack worked well. I triple-flushed, and each time there was a Lightning commission and active multiplier.

If you prefer cleaner odds and calmer bankroll movement, a standard Evolution blackjack table is the better choice.
