Did you ever wonder how all-time greats like Tony Bloom and Kid Poker amassed their gambling fortune? These are the paths and career moves that brought them success, their celebrated victories and losses, and larger-than-life tales about the enormous wealth they have accumulated over the years.
How We Picked the Top Gamblers in the World
For this article, we picked the most successful gamblers from the European Union, the UK, and Canada in 2024. Even though most of these players made their fortune fair and square, some were struck by sheer luck. We excluded gamblers who bet on sports and only looked at players who made their money playing popular games like poker, blackjack, and roulette – in live and online tournaments alike.

When asked how poker affects his life, Tony Bloom famously said:
“Poker can teach people about life, about personalities, character.”
The following gamblers have played the game exceptionally well and been rewarded not only with tournament cash, but also immense knowledge about entrepreneurship and life that made their wealth grow beyond their wildest imagination.

You may know him by his cold-blooded nickname, the Lizard, but he has also been described as the Godfather of Gambling. Besides, Tony Bloom is an accomplished English entrepreneur, the owner of Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club, and the founder of a sports betting consultancy, Starlizard.
Raised in a family of gamblers, Tony honed his skills on fruit machines as a schoolboy. He then studied mathematics at Manchester University, an expertise that helped him become one of the most prolific players and best gamblers of all time.
Bloom kicked off his career on the British show Late Night Poker, but he didn’t stay on for long. After he won the Australian Championship in Melbourne in 2004, everyone in the online gambling community knew his name. Next year, Bloom made sure nobody forgot it by winning the No Limit Hold’em VC Poker Cup in London and making waves in the £1.2 million sale of his Asian handicap system.
Over the course of his career, Bloom earned $3,890,086 in live tournament cash. Although retired, he’s not finished playing yet. In 2022, the wealthiest game master on Earth was seen joining the Poker Masters PLO event for $250,000 and going home from Las Vegas with full pockets.

After establishing herself as the No. 1 in the online casino sphere, Kristen has gradually transitioned to high-stakes live games, where she has received the Global Poker Index Female Player of the Year award three times and is currently the only woman with four World Series of Poker bracelets (in 2013, 2016, 2020, and 2023).

Finland’s highest-grossing professional poker player and newly inducted Hall of Famer, Patrik Antonius, started playing cards with his friends after a back injury ended his promising tennis career. You might remember seeing him on Poker After Dark, Late Night Poker, and Poker Million, where he became a familiar face by the end of the 2000s. Around this time, Antonio also participated in the European Poker Tour and World Poker Tour.
During this majestic streak, Antonius triumphed at the European Poker Tour Baden Main Event in 2005, finishing 9th at the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. WSOP event and 2nd in Las Vegas at the Five Diamond World Poker Classic tournament in December that year, where he won $1,046,470.
He also secured a 3rd place in the $10,000 World Championship Pot-Limit Omaha in 2007, 7th in the $10,000 World Championship Pot-Limit Hold’em for more than $120,000 in 2008, and finally sealed his reputation in a face-off against Tom Dwan in the infamous 2009 Durrrr Challenge.

By 2016, Antonius had made over $17 million online and had the biggest win in online poker history: a massive $1.3 million pot against “Isildur1” in a high-stakes Pot Limit Omaha game. He peaked in March 2018 at a tournament in Macau, when he finished 2nd at the Super High Roller Bowl.
Even the pandemic couldn’t hold Anotinius down. In 2023, he won a $1,978,000 cash game pot in the largest-ever broadcast on a US live stream. He then moved on to take Cyprus and Madrid with top-ten finishes at four Triton Poker Series tournaments.
Antonio has continued where he left off in 2024 and won another Triton Super High Roller Series tournament, this time in Korea, for over $2.2 million. As if that wasn’t enough for this year, he cashed another $2,107,934 million at EPT Monte Carlo, where he finished first.

Jonathan Duhamel was 23 when he won the no-limit Texas Hold’em tournament. The event crowned him the world champion and earned him a page in history books. Today, he is known as a three-time WSOP bracelet winner. If you love this game, his 2010 World Series of Poker win lives rent-free in your mind.
The iconic Main Event game against John Racener brought more than $8,944,310 and a WSOP bracelet to Duhamel. He became the first Canadian pro gambler to win the prestigious prize – no small feat for a finance college dropout. But his victory made headlines for another reason: Duhamel donated $100,000 of his winnings to the Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation.
In 2011, Duhamel jumped on a hot streak by earning $272,209 at the EPT’s High Roller Event in January and more than $40,000 at the World Series of Poker. Going forward, he swept the final four tables at the Caribbean PokerStars Adventure at the start of 2012 and cashed $125,000 at the Premier League Poker VI in London in March 2013.
Duhamel’s second WSOP bracelet and a $3,989,985 profit for a $111,111 buy-in in a 2015 WSOP High Roller for One Drop spectacle, this time against Bill Klein, is just as unforgettable as the first one. He climbed to the 5th spot on the Global Poker Index the next year, but he certainly didn’t stop there. By March 2017, Duhamel was worth over $17,500,000 in tournament winnings alone.

Despite his occasional overconfidence, many believe Daniel Negreanu, also known as Kid Poker, is the best gambler in the world. Negreanu, whose parents were Romanian, was born in Canada in 1974. A maths nerd, he left school to play poker. His early career was difficult; he had to return to Canada after squandering his bankroll in Vegas. He studied nonstop, driven to get better, and by 1997, he had made his way back to the table.
When Negreanu won his first WSOP event in 1998 at the age of 23, he became the youngest winner in history. He earned almost $5 million and was crowned Poker Player of the Year in 2004. This year, he solidified his GOAT status by winning his seventh WSOP bracelet, the first since October 2013.
