Written by Jamie Wall

With a history that can be traced back to 10th-century Chinese cards, poker is a game which popularity has spanned centuries. But after so many years and players, pinpointing the world’s best poker player is challenging. Since this is a subjective topic, Gamblizard decided to look at factors like competition wins, earnings, unique game approaches, and reputation to narrow down the list. We’ll then showcase the top players, their nicknames, ages, and tables with their strengths and weaknesses.

10 Famous Poker Players You Need To Know

Knowing the greatest poker players doesn’t just increase your understanding of the game. It can push your practice to the next level with world-class inspiration and pro-approved strategies. Without further ado, here are the best poker players of all time, in no particular order.

David Peters, United States

Born 1987. Age: 36

Unlike some poker professionals, David Peters doesn’t bask in media attention, so many fans don’t know his name too well. However, his poker career is extensively decorated, and as of April 2024, he’s the 10th ranking on The Hendon Mob’s All-Time Money List with $45M in live earnings.

Peters started with freeroll tournaments and built an online bankroll. With time, he turned this hobby into a thriving international poker career. Notable wins for Peters include WSOP bracelets in 2026, 2020, and 2021.

Today, far from his humble beginnings, Peters is among the top poker players competing in high-stakes tournaments worldwide.

This alone earns him a spot on the list, but his $56M total live earnings and 71 WSOP cashes and bracelet also prove his prowess at the table; just as the fact he’s one of the highest-earning poker players worldwide. Chidwick sat at the top spot of the Global Poker Index (GPO) for seven months (April to October 2018).

In 2008, Chidwick’s career started making waves after he won $88,760. From here, he continued competing online and at events. He then progressed to his first WSOP cash in 2010.

Fun Fact: Selbst’s biggest win ever was $1.8M in 2010.

Selbst’s successful career started when she was 20 and studying at Yale. Alongside earning her law degree (and later passing the New York bar exam), Selbst explored the world of No Limit Texas Hold’em and Pot-Limit Omaha online. Luckily, Howard Lederer was on hand to give her the lowdown five minutes before playing. Harman was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame in 2015, cementing her success in history.

There’s even a 2015 documentary called ‘KidPoker’ which details how he became one of the best poker players in the world.

Born 1953, died 1998 (aged 45)

Another name often regarded as the best poker player ever, Stu Ungar is a truly iconic poker and blackjack player. This New York native learned the game younger than most players—it is this, perhaps, that gave him an advantage over opponents. This was because of his dad, who was a part of the gambling business. Ungar is also known for his youthful looks, earning him the nickname ‘Stuey the Kid’ or simply ‘The Kid.’ His iconic titles include three WSOP Main Event wins and two WSOP bracelets.

Alongside poker, Ungar excelled in gin rummy and blackjack. He once stated:

Some day, I suppose it’s possible for someone to be a better no limit hold’em player than me. I doubt it, but it could happen. But, I swear to you, I don’t see how anyone could ever play gin better than me.

FAQ

Who is the highest-paid poker player?

It’s unclear, since some players only played cash poker games. However, many consider Phil Ivey to be the highest-paid player, as he has a net worth of $125M. Alongside his successful online winnings, Ivey once won $16M in a high-stakes cash game against Andy Beal, a Texan billionaire.

Is poker a game of skill or luck?

It’s considered a mix of both. Chance dictates how the cards are dealt. However, talented players use calculations, psychology, and strategy to turn the odds in their favour. Practice and research can help you improve your poker skills. But you can never remove the element of luck from the game.

Which country has the best poker players?

The United States produces many professional poker players. But it’s not the only country with top-tier pros. The UK, Canada, and Germany also have thriving poker scenes and top-rated experts. It also depends on how you classify the ‘best’, as the answer will change depending on whether you look at wins, total earnings, notoriety, and career length.

Are poker players smart?

Yes, most poker players score highly on IQ tests. But intelligence isn’t the only trait needed to succeed on the felt. You must also be adept at reading body language and concealing your emotions. Poker skills are something you need to work on over time. So, alongside natural intellect, professionals also use practice and social skills to win.

What personality traits are associated with poker success?

Staying calm under pressure, not taking things too seriously, and having confidence are linked with poker success. Studies have also shown that top players are more likely to be extroverted and cope well with fast-paced changes. While these traits are common amongst the best, quieter pros like David Peters, have proven that you can still be excellent at the game without them.
